The 2021 real estate tax bills are slated to be mailed out on Thursday.
The first payment of 2021 county real estate taxes are due by Monday, June 7, and the second installment is due by Dec. 6.
All prepayments, veteran’s relief and tax relief for the elderly and disabled have been applied to the bills before they were printed and mailed.
“If you have received tax relief and have a balance due, please be sure to pay the balance on time to avoid losing your tax relief,” said Ruth Oakes, county treasurer.
Post office postmarks are the official dates to determine if a payment is late or on time. Under state law, a 10% penalty and a 10% per year daily interest charge will be added to all unpaid taxes.
Taxpayers are asked to keep the second payment for the Dec. 6 installment since they will not receive a second bill for the remainder of their annual tax, according to Oakes.
“You may mail both installments if you wish and pay your entire tax bill in full by June 7. If you desire a receipt, send a self-addressed stamped envelope,” said Oakes.
For payments, detach the bill coupons and mail check or money order to the County Treasurer’s office at P.O. Box 825 Halifax, VA 24558 or place payments in the drop box located outside the front door at the Mary Bethune Office Complex.
Payments also may be made at the county treasurer’s office at 1030 Cowford Road, Halifax, VA 24558.
Taxpayers can use major credit/debit cards to make payments for an additional fee of 3% of total tax or a $3 minimum fee.
Payments also are accepted online at www.WebFeePay.com or call the office to pay over the phone, same fees apply. Enter bill numbers, category of tax and telephone number when using online payment. Online payments also should be recorded as of June 7.
If anyone receives a tax bill that is escrowed with monthly mortgage payment, forward the bill to the appropriate bank or Mortgage Company.
If anyone is a new landowner after Jan. 1 and did not receive a bill, call the county treasurer’s office. Assessments on the land book are made as of Jan. 1 of each year.
“It is the responsibility of the owner to make sure his bills are paid in a timely manner,” said Oakes.
All address changes should be forwarded to the commissioner of revenue at (434) 476-3314.
