The Power is Now

Kauai’s ‘Butterfly House’ Is a Rare, Architectural New Build on the Hawaiian Island’s North Shore – Mansion Global

Listing of the Day

Location: Hanalei, Hawaii

Price: $12.5 million

This brand-new beachfront home, scheduled for completion by the end of this year, is a rarity both for its contemporary design and its location on one of Hawaii’s best-known beaches.

Dubbed “The Butterfly House” for its soaring roof lines, it’s the first newly constructed house on the North Shore of Kauai (Hawaii’s northernmost and fourth largest island) in the past two decades. The contemporary design features a wing-like metal roof and a wide-open view of breaking waves and the ocean reef. Hawaii-based architect Deborah Rosenblum of Design/Create Space designed the home, said co-listing agent Tiffany Spencer.

The property’s grassy yard opens directly onto the North Shore’s beach and is steps away from the ocean.

“The naming of the home actually comes from Deb Rosenblum,” added co-listing agent Ben Welborn. “I personally love the contemporary architecture and the high floor-to-ceiling glass windows and doors that allow you to take in the views..”

Situated on more than one-half acre, the house has 615 square feet of lanais and captures views in two directions: the coral reef out front and the lush mountain and waterfall views behind.

Indoors, the three-bedroom home has expansive rooms filled with natural ambient light throughout from modular wall plates (up to 16 feet in height) and custom Fleetwood sliding doors that create a seamless transition between the indoor and outdoor living areas.

One design highlight is the wide built-in bench seat near the dining area. Set against a high bank of windows, it frames the dramatic scenery of the Kauai mountains.

The agents noted that the designers have employed a range of natural materials in earth tones to give this home a modern yet airy beach vibe. The buyer will have the option of choosing their own finishing touches.

“This really is a rare opportunity to move into a brand-new oceanfront home on the North Shore of Kauai,” Ms. Spencer said. “The buyer will immediately be able to enjoy a beautiful oceanfront home, without the headache of designing and building, which typically takes years due to strict permitting requirements in Hawaii.”

The ocean’s crystal-clear waters are mere steps away from the house.
