Congressional Black Caucus Issues Statement on Nashville City Council Reappointing Rep. Justin Jones to Tennessee Legislature

Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford (NV-04) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued the following statement regarding the reappointment of State Representative Justin Jones to the Tennessee Legislature following being unjustly expelled for protesting gun violence.

“In the past several days, the Congressional Black Caucus has called for the immediate reappointment of Representatives Justin Jones and Justin Pearson, who rightfully demanded that the Republican majority in the State Legislature take action to keep their communities safe from gun violence. We applaud the Nashville City Council for unanimously reappointing Rep. Jones to give voice back to the constituents that sent him to the Legislature. While this is what the residents of Nashville deserve, we must recognize that Rep. Jones was reappointed to his position not because the Republican majority did the right thing, but because Rep. Jones’ constituents in Nashville, joined by supporters from all over our country, peacefully voiced their concerns about the prevalence of gun violence in our communities and the ongoing assault by Republicans on our democracy.”

“Rep. Justin Jones’ reappointment is a victory only because the residents of Nashville would not be disenfranchised and cast aside because Republicans would rather put politics over public safety. The Congressional Black Caucus will continue to do all we can to ensure that both Rep. Jones and Pearson are reappointed and seated back in the State Legislature.”
