Today, Congressional Black Caucus Chairman Steven Horsford (NV-04) and members of the Congressional Black Caucus issued a statement following the ceremonial swearing-in of U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler:
“Today, the Congressional Black Caucus is proud to welcome U.S. Senator Laphonza Butler as the Caucus’ historic 59th member. Our Caucus and the state of California will be better-served because of Senator Butler’s years of leadership, and we are immensely honored to add her expertise to our ranks. As the first lesbian Black woman in the U.S. Senate, and as a years-long advocate for women and union workers, Senator Butler is uniquely positioned to serve the people of California and our nation at a time when the rights of women, Black Americans, workers, and LGBTQ+ people are under attack.”
